Beltane Fire Festival 2026: A Celebration of Celtic Fire in Edinburgh

Welcome to the Beltane Fire Festival 2026

Humankind has always been connected to fire—a source of survival, protection, and purification. The flames ward off enemies and cleanse the soul, symbolising renewal and vitality. As the sun returns in spring to warm the frozen earth, life blooms once more, and fertility reignites.

The Beltane Fire Festival celebrates these ancient traditions. It is a tribute to deities, a plea for the protection of livestock, and a connection to Mother Earth’s cycles. This fiery celebration marks the beginning of summer and is one of the most captivating pagan rituals revived in modern Scotland.

The Origins of Beltane

Dating back to the Iron Age, the origins of Beltane are intertwined with Celtic rituals performed by druids. Bonfires were lit to bless livestock, as the smoke and ashes were believed to have protective properties. The ceremony included dances, leaps through flames, and concluded with a grand pagan feast.

In 1988, Edinburgh revived this tradition on Calton Hill, not as a tourist attraction but to honour Scotland’s ancient heritage. Today, it draws both locals and visitors to partake in its mystical atmosphere.

Highlights of the Festival

Ritual of The May Queen and The Green Man

After hours of mystical rituals and enduring the cold of the deep night in Edinburgh, the festival’s most awaited moment arrives—the awakening of the May Queen. A large procession of beings from the underworld will be responsible for rousing Her Majesty with the roll of their drums and escorting her toward the long-awaited meeting with the Green Man.

He must shed his winter attire, as this marks the moment of transformation and the sexual fertility that gives birth to life. Together, they partake in this ancient ritual that will usher in their reign. Their souls will lead the seasons of spring and summer, while we, the mortals, live on the sidelines of their actions.

Beltane and Other Fire Celebrations

Flames have always been present during the changing of the seasons. The Celtic god Belenus, the deity of light, sun, and fire, was invoked for protection during these times.

It seems that Beltane is not the only fire festival celebrated around this time. Walpurgis Night, celebrated on the night of April 30th, also takes place in Northern and Central Europe. It is dedicated to Saint Walburga, who is credited with Christianizing the German people. The rituals associated with Walpurgis are aimed at fighting against plagues, rabies, whooping cough, and witchcraft.

The Flame That Unites Us

We know it will happen, whether we are present or not. This wheel must keep turning; the very meaning of Beltane tells us so—’Brilliant Fire.’ That flame must remain alight within us, symbolizing change, inner strength, and the hope to keep fighting together for our survival.
